Getting pet is awesome

So today my aide and I went to a bike store. We were ten minutes early and it was not open so we had to wait outside. This man came up to us and started making small talk. At first he was just talking about the bike shop. Then he asked what I wanted to buy. My aide replied "Oh she's training a service dog and she wants to buy a bell to get her dog to come". At that point (for some reason)he was standing next to me and he started to pet my head. My aide and I were looking at each other like WTF. Thankfully his bus came and I got rid of the "petter". Seriously I know I will get pet more times than my service dog.

  1. Ugh! Being friends with a little person, I understand the petting thing. Tousling the hair of a 5 year old is borderline inappropriate, but with an adult? that's harassment! I hope that people pet the doggie instead of you. That's just creepy.

  2. Last time this happened to me, I said "Bad touch! Bad touch!" in a loud voice, and the perp withdrew his hand and quickly walked away.

  3. Maybe you could have it pre-arranged with your aide that when someone starts petting you, your aide should start petting them!

  4. I thought you were human....how strange maybe I am on the wrong planet here. I would have thought the same thing. Never fails, everyday there's something new to see and learn.

  5. The world is stuffed full of people who are nutty as fruitcakes. I wonder who he would have tried to pet if you were not there.

  7. OMG, people try to do that to my friend too! She has CP and is in a wheelchair. I've been her staff three different times, and we always encounter the dumbest people! I get so worked up about how people treat people in wheelchairs, but mostly she just laughs it off. I love your blog!

  8. You have awesome hair, so I can't say I blame him for wanting to touch it. Actually doing it is another thing, though. Maybe you should get a stun gun and have your aide zap anyone who touches you inappropriately.

  9. I have to say that I love the idea that your aide will start petting their hair. There's already a built in comeback, if they make an issue of it - she can just say "what? I thought this was how you said hello. I just wanted to make you feel comfortable." Of course, anyone who thinks it's OK to PET someone whom they don't know probably won't be very affected by sarcasm...
